Shrines: Feminine libation

Year: 2021 Medium: Exterior latex, layered wood panels

Artist Statement: A Shrine is a home of homage, giving reverence to what is held high. An intentional combination of things that commemorate what we celebrate. Visual tributes made of countless motifs, textured by our divine history, undeniable culture and tradition, held together with everlasting spirit and soul.

Black people are not monolithic —like collages, our heritage has layers that tell infinite stories that we can only define ourselves.

Power to the People presents Shrines: Not Your Average Juneteenth 2021 — a curated cultural exhibition featuring Grand Rapids based Black women artists, creating space for us to celebrate our culture and history our way.

Creative Director: Asia Horne

Partners: Power to the People 616, Kristin Zuller (artist) Darline & Co. (photo), Josh Theil (makeup)
